Wallace Langham, who plays David Hodges, the chief lab rat in CSI, gives some sneak insights into Season Eight of the series. RADIN SRI GHAZALI pays close attention.

HE is the ring leader of the lab rats in the popular drama series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, aired on AXN (Astro channel 701) every Wednesday (10pm).

The witty and quirky David Hodges, played by actor and comedian Wallace Langham in the eighth season of the hit investigative cult series, proves that he is as much of a team player as the other officers under the leadership of Gil Grissom (played by William Petersen).

Yet, in real life, Langham said he is far from what his CSI role has to offer.

“We are worlds apart. I am nothing like Hodges. He is inquisitive and always on the go. Hodges will have a million things to say and he loves challenging people,” said Langham in a phone interview recently from the United States.
The 43-year-old actor, who started off his career as a comedian, emphasises that his true personality is rather dull.

“I am an ordinary person who lives a rather boring life. The only upper hand that I have in comparison to Hodges is that I am happily married with kids and he is not. Hodges is still seeking and finds it hard to get a decent relationship,” laughed Langham.

“Still, I would love to live Hodges’ life. He makes thing exciting with his smart remarks and cynical attitude,” he said.

Besides leading the sidekick pack of CSI, Langham’s character will take a prominent role in an episode titled You Kill Me (to be aired tonight).

“I am truly excited about the episode. It showcases more on the lab rats and with Hodges leading the pack,” he said, adding that his character took charge of the case the same way he did in an episode from Season Seven involving “the miniature killer”.

In the eighth episode of the eighth season of the show, Hodges creates a hypothetical murder case around the lab and creates a game for his fellow lab rats.

He gets the likes of (his colleagues) Wendy Simms (played by Liz Vassey) and Archie Johnson (Archie Kao) to join in and be part of the mysterious “deaths” in the lab.

“He loves taking charge of situations. In this episode, Hodges once again leads the team in a make-believe scenario that they have to solve within the crime lab. The interesting part is that each victim is the lab rats themselves,” he explained.

“He just wants to show Grissom that he is a smart guy and very much valuable to the team. You Kill Me obviously show Hodges trying to be at par with his idol (Grissom),” he said.

As in his whirlwind romance with fellow lab mate Simms, Langham hopes that his character will be given justice in winning her heart.

“I think that is high time that Hodges and Simms get together. It has been a few seasons that they have been throwing hints at each other,” he said.

Yet, CSI proves that there is no room for romance among the characters.

Even the leading character, Grissom, has to come to terms with Sara Sidle’s (played by Jorja Fox) departure from the team.

“I would like to break that barrier. Most viewers know that it is hard to have an office romance especially with the working environment in CSI. I do believe that Hodges still has a chance to win Simms’ heart,” he said.

“It will take time to develop the relationship and I hope that the producers would take the chance in bringing both of them together,” he said.

When asked what the fans of the show can look forward to in season eight, Langham replied: “Well there are a few nice surprises for the fans. There will be one episode that is written by the team behind the sitcom Two and a Half Men. It is called Death of a Sitcom Star. It is hilarious.”

The latest season also witnesses Fox bidding farewell to the show after playing Sara for eight season.

“It is not as much fun without her on set. Jorja works hard and she is dedicated to her role. She has always been a part of the family and it is very hard for us to see her go,” he said.

When asked if she will be replaced, Langham said, “We are not sure about that at the moment but we do have guest-starring roles in the series.”

His role as the super nerd of CSI aside, Langham said has a number of projects in the pipelines.

“I am in a movie called Great Buck Howard. It is a movie about a magician trying to resurrect his dying career. I play a casino owner who gives the magician his much needed break. It is a small part, really,” he said.

Besides that, fans could also catch Langham in a recent Superbowl commercial.

“I played a shaving cream sales man. It is a hilarious advertisement,” he said.

Robert David Hall on Dourdan: He's Back at Work

robert-david-hall.htm
I just caught up with Robert David Hall - a wonderful veteran TV actor, lovely guy, and of course Dr. Al Robbins on "CSI" - by phone a few minutes ago. He's gonna be in town to present a major award at the U.N. next Tuesday. (More on that in a second.)

And of course, I turned the conversation immediately to Gary Dourdan, Hall's (obviously) troubled colleague who was arrested outside Palm Springs early yesterday in possession of various illegal substances.

In any event, the news: Hall tells me Dourdan was actually on set yesterday (long after his arrest, of course)

"I actually worked with him yesterday, and everybody was moving on. It's real hard to get work done when your're so close to the end of the season [show wraps this week then takes a week off before getting to the ninth season]."

I asked him what the talk of the set re: Dourdan is: "Almost to a person, I'd say ninety-nine percent of the cast and crew are very hopeful that Gary will be OK, and we love him deeply."

So...why's Dourdan leaving (at the end of May, when "CSI" introduces a pair of new-comers)?

"He wants to do other things," says Hall. "That's the speculation...You and I and the majority of other people would say, why would anyone leave a hit show [Hall just signed for three more seasons] but everybody's different. I can't comment on why Gary and CBS are parting company, but I was told he has dreams of [doing other things - maybe movies?] He's a generous, soulful guy. I read the same stuff you do. I just know him as the guy who gave me a big hug yesterday. The cast and crew want the best for Gary."

Ah yes, that award: It's the Franklin Delano Roosevelt International Disability Award; Hall's presenting it next week to the country of New Zealand, along with a $50,000 grant that'll be used to benefit disabled Kiwis.
